Case Telefonica Moviles
Telefónica Móviles Spain – Mobile Office to Corporate Customers
Background
Telefónica Móviles, a Telefónica Group company, is the world’s second-largest mobile multinational and the leading cellular company in the Spanish-and Portuguese-speaking markets. The company has operations in 15 countries across three continents: Spain, Morocco, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.
At the beginning of 2001 the company identified the need to widen their offering to corporate customers from voice services to data access. The decision was made to offer a server based online service first to IBM/Lotus Notes e-mail and later to widen the offering on e-mail side to Microsoft Exchange. So the first stage was to mobilize e-mails. The second stage included mobilization offering to corporate databases.
Solution
The company wanted to start to offer mobile office services to their corporate customers and this is why they started a co-operation with IBM and Sofor to mobilize IBM/Lotus Domino applications. The basic idea was that the co-operation would work so, that
- Telefónica Móviles would market the solution to they customer base
- IBM would host the service – but the servers would be located in Telefónica Móviles premises
- Sofor would offer Waplane technology as licenses and later the technical support and maintenance would be offered by Sofor
The mobilization was executed with Sofor Waplane and as a result to this Waplane was offered as a part of Telefónica Móviles Oficin@MoviStar service package. The first solutions mobilized where e-mail and PIM functions and later Telefónica Móviles offered the to solution other applications like CRM and Sales Information databases.
Benefits
Benefits in this case to the operator were, that they had a ready and hosted solution to offer to their customers. Telefónica Móviles did not need to hire extra IT and development personnel to be able to offer this service. IBM and Sofor where ready to support the actual sales cases in situations where integration work was needed. As the co-operation was originally divided between the three companies, the co-operation did run smoothly. In later phase the support and maintenance was done directly from Sofor.Technology
The offered service was a hosted service by Telefónica. Basically this meant that the servers where at Telefónica IT center and the maintenance and technical support was done by IBM/Sofor.- Web And Mobile backend: IBM/Lotus Domino with Waplane and Microsoft Exchange
